Dante Alighieri’s Purgatorio

Dante’s Purgatorio is the second of three courses that cover the whole of his Divine ComedyInferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso. This course was originally offered live and is now available OnDemand.

In this course, we’ll see how Dante and his guide Virgil have come ashore on the island mountain of Purgatory and ascend towards the summit where the Earthly Paradise, the original state of life on earth, still exists and may be entered those who have purged themselves of sins. Along the way, we’ll see how virtues are developed that offset the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Gluttony, Avarice, and Lust. And how souls become ready to begin their pilgrimage to Heaven and ultimately the Beatific Vision.

The course includes:

  • 6  2-hour video lectures, each session covers about four Cantos of Purgatorio
  • An optional copy of Dante Alighieri: Divine Comedy, Divine Spirituality by Robert Royal
  • Extra reading material related to the course (optional)
  • Unlimited access to the course

We highly recommend students also independently purchase a copy of either Anthony Esolen or Robert and Jean Hollander’s translation of Dante’s Purgatorio.

What course participants say

"I very much enjoyed the Dante course, a most valuable pilgrimage. I found the illustrations you have provided to be most helpful in understanding the characters and architecture of hell."
